Fiberglass buildings can be formulated to resist a whole host of corrosive environments. It all depends on the kind of corrosive environment to which the building will be subjected.
Clearly FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) buildings do not rust, and they generally have excellent resistance to aqueous solutions (salts, acids, etc.). But many of our clients need our shelters for more stringent applications than one might typically find. They know there is nothing “typical” about a Shelter Works shelter! We have the ability to formulate our fiberglass to perform in more difficult environments, withstanding chemicals commonly used in water and waste water and other industrial applications that can rapidly attack and degrade FRP made with general purpose polyester resin, such as nitric acid, hydrofluorosilicic acid, and sodium hypochlorite, to name a few.
Because every one of our shelters is custom-made, we work with our clients to understand specifically what they need. We can manufacture field equipment protection for our clients using many special polyester and vinylester resins that are formulated to stand up to a wide range of corrosive chemicals. There are also special gel coats that offer chemical resistance as well. In order to know what type of resin is best for an application, we ask our clients such questions as:
- Will the chemical be in direct contact with the building?
- Will the exposure be intermittent or prolonged?
- Will it be in the form of a liquid or a gas?
- What will be the concentration of the chemical (measured in parts per million, or %)?
- What will be the maximum temperature in the building?
Our Field Equipment Specialists seek to understand the uses of the shelters, so that we can design our fiberglass building to the exact specifications needed. This attention to detail ensures low-maintenance, long-lasting structures that will protect equipment even in the harshest environments!
